If your baby starts teething early, do not worry, this
happens rather often. On average, 4 lower front teeth and upper central incisors
appear in the age of 6-7 months. First upper side incisors appear approximately
2 months later.
If your baby starts teething later, this is not a sign of organism’s
backwardness. Do not rush to a dentist and make an X-ray, excepting some extreme
cases. Stomatologists do not recommend making teeth X-rays for small children.
This is connected with the fact that babies are difficult to “collaborate” with,
for example, sitting calmly with open mouth, doctors also try not to subject
baby’s developing bones to X-rays.
Temperature. During teething a baby can have temperature drops. However, high
temperature (39-40) is caused by some infection, and you need to apply for a
doctor.
Stomatorrhagia. When a new tooth appears, gums can become purple red, and
sometimes bluish, as blood rushes to tissues. Sometimes this blood can come out.
You should not be frightened of it, but you need to watch closely to avoid
increase of bleeding. Otherwise, you need to call a doctor.
How to reduce unpleasant sensations while teething. During teething gums can
swell up a little, salivation increases, cheeks redden and a baby can even have
rash. Back teeth usually cause more troubles, than front. Children normally have
a wish to bite something hard. There are several ways to reduce pain and
unpleasant sensations. You can use teething rings, local anesthetics and
analgesics.
Teething rings with cooling effect give freezing effect. But here you should
avoid rings filled with liquid inside, as a baby can bite them through. You also
should not give your baby small objects, only those that are safe and cannot be
swollen. Such old methods, as wet gauze and cold spoon also bring relief, as
well as when a baby passes his finger over gum.
In special cases, system analgesics are good. For example, if you notice
inflammation, it is better using ibuprofen, as this medicine contains
antiphlogistic component unlike acetaminophen. On no account give your baby
aspirin. If a baby cannot fall asleep, you can give him light sedative. However,
you should definitely consult a doctor before giving your baby any medicine.
Local anesthetics contain benzocaine as an active component, causing numbness
or, in other words, freezing of gums. Parents should avoid anesthetics
containing alcohol.
Besides various medicines, parents should not be lazy during this period and
show inventiveness to distract a baby from source of irritation.
Parents also should be attentive to avoid mixing symptoms of a real disease with
normal symptoms of teething. You should urgently apply for a doctor, if your
baby has high temperature for more than 48 hours or if it is higher 37,8, if a
baby has diarrhea, sickness, serious sleep disorders, coryza. |
